Department Overview:

The City of Oxford Division of Fire was founded in 1833. It provides fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) for the City of Oxford, including the campus of Miami University, and Oxford Township. It also provides EMS for the Village of College Corner, Ohio, and for the western half of Milford Township.

The FT Fire Department members work 24-hour shifts beginning at 7 AM every third day. Other shifts are filled by our PT staff, who work 12-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM or 7 PM to 7 AM or 24-hour shifts from 7 AM to 7 AM. We currently have 16 FT budgeted staff members, 23 PT Firefighters/Paramedics/EMTs, and 9 Student EMTs.

In addition to performing the fire suppression activities typically associated with a fire department, the Fire Department provides advanced life support (paramedic) ambulance services for the city of Oxford and the surrounding communities.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
Vision: Vision abilities required include close vision, distance, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
College: No
Prior Experience: Minimum 1-year experience in fire and EMS or any combination of education, training, and work experience that provides the required skill sets to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Certifications:

Firefighter II certification from the State of Ohio prior to appointment.
Current Ohio EMT-P certification or enrolled in a class in good standing that will be completed and Ohio certification issued prior to the end of a 24-month probationary period.
Hiring Process:

Applicants will be required to complete:


A City of Oxford Employment application.
All candidates must take the FireTEAM exam as well as the Firefighter Mile exam through the National Testing Network to be considered further in the hiring process. To be considered for this round of hiring, all testing must be completed by April 28, 2025.
A minimum score of 70% is required on the FireTEAM Exam.
8 out of 10 possible points is required on the Firefighter Mile Exam.
Additional credit for education (official college transcripts only), active military service (DD214), or City of Oxford service credit will be applied to passing scores in accordance with Rule V of the Classified Service Procedures and Personnel Appeals Board Rules and Regulations. Proof of additional credit must be turned in to the Human Resources Manager by May 12, 2025.
Interviews & Beyond:

Candidates who are in the top five of the eligibility list will be interviewed and begin the background process. Additional interviews may be required. As candidates are excluded from the Eligibility List, the next viable candidates may be interviewed. Candidates are removed from the eligibility list after one year.
