Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The University of North Carolina Wilmington Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography seeks a post-doctoral scholar interested in using nonlinear dynamics tools applied to the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC).

As part of a multi-institutional team, funded by the National Science Foundation, the project 'Prospects and limitations of predicting a potential collapse of the AMOC' seeks a post-doctoral scientist who will explore idealized numerical models and use nonlinear time series analysis to investigate the stability of the AMOC. We invite applications from candidates with expertise in physical science, applied mathematics, oceanography, earth science, or climate science.

UNCW postdoctoral scholars gain important training and research experience through their relationship with the university in ways that support and fulfill the research, scholarship, and teaching missions of the institution. The primary responsibility of the postdoctoral scholar is to conduct research and upon initial appointment, may provide oversight of research projects and personnel, project management, assistance in development and writing of proposals and manuscripts, data acquisition, higher-level interpretation of computational results and comprehensive data analysis. These activities may be carried out in both field and laboratory settings.

The UNCW postdoctoral scholar will:
  • Have a primary faculty mentor (Dr. Dylan McNamara).
  • Develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) in coordination with their faculty mentor.
  • Participate in professional development programming offered through the University.




Appointment Description:
This full-time appointment will be initially for one year and is renewable (not to exceed a total of five (5) years) contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding. The starting date is May 1, 2025, and can be negotiable.



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in Physical Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Earth and Climate Sciences or a closely related field.

NOTE:
  • Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered to be eligible for employment if the doctoral degree is conferred by the appointment start date.
  • Exceptions to the 5-year degree requirement may be waived in exceptional circumstances.




Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Expertise in at least one of the following areas:
  • Ocean dynamics
  • Climate/ocean/earth based idealized modelling
  • Nonlinear dynamics theory
  • Nonlinear time series analysis
  • Experience with coding in MATLAB or Python

The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography is an academic unit within the College of Science and Engineering. The Department provides quality programs leading to B.S. and B.A. degrees in Physics, Coastal Engineering, or 3+2 Physics/Electrical Engineering. The Department is also engaged in elementary particle and theoretical physics research, as well as a range of research in physical oceanography and coastal ocean engineering.


A strong commitment also exists to provide research opportunities for student participation in the scholarly activity of its faculty. The Department supports the College's mission by providing service courses in the natural sciences that acquaint beginning students with the laws of nature and develop their abilities to reason and think critically.



College: College of Science and Engineering - 323 CollegeThe College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelors/masters degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. A 2+2 in engineering; and 3+2 programs in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; and physics and electrical engineering, are also offered in the college. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.CSE students work with distinguished faculty and scientists, use cutting edge technology, and conduct impactful research.
